Garnett The Great

By depicting a scenario where Garnett's harmful situation is discovered & he receives the care & support he deserves, I explored the power of resilience & the longing for a happier outcome. While the true story of Garnett Spears is heartbreaking, this fictional narrative serves as a testament to the human spirit's capacity for hope & healing, portraying a version of events that I truly wish had come to pass."

Garnett Spears lay in his hospital bed, his eyes flickering open as his mother, Lacey, paced the room with an anxious energy. Despite the promising news that Garnett would be discharged later that day, Lacey couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at her insides.

She didn't want Garnett to get better; she was comfortable in the routine of hospital visits & the attention it brought her. The thought of him leaving filled her with dread & she was determined to do whatever it took to keep him there by her side.

With a sense of grim determination, Lacey waited until the nurse & doctor had left the room, their words of encouragement falling on deaf ears. As soon as the coast was clear, she helped Garnett off his bed, Garnett cuddling her before she placed him down, then by the hand she led him to the bathroom, her mind racing with desperate thoughts.

Once inside, Lacey retrieved a cup filled with a saline solution from her bag, along with a syringe & connector tube for Garnett's G tube. With trembling hands, she drew up the solution, her heart pounding in her chest as she prepared to carry out her plan.

But just as she was about to administer the saline into Garnett's G tube, the door to the main room swung open & a nurse entered, her eyes widening in shock as she took in the scene before her.

Without missing a beat, the nurse crossed the room, her gaze never leaving Lacey as she passed the open door to the bathroom, her breath catching in her throat as she realised what Lacey was about to do.

With a steady hand, the nurse pressed the call button, summoning help as she kept Lacey within her line of sight. Moments later, another nurse arrived, her eyes widening as she took in the scene before her.

"Call the police," the first nurse said, her voice steady despite the chaos unfolding around them.

As Lacey was escorted away, the nurses caring for Garnett sprang into action. They contacted a friend of Lacey's who had been a regular visitor of Garnett, knowing that Garnett didn't actually know that it was his 'mother' who was making him sick. He loved his 'mama' & thought she cared for him, so he was upset to see her taken away screaming. While he waited for a familiar face to reassure him, the nurses provided him comfort & support.

Meanwhile, Garnett's family in Kentucky & Florida were contacted & they were on their way to the hospital as soon as possible.

As Garnett watched his mother being taken away, tears streaming down his face, he felt a sense of confusion & sadness wash over him. But as the nurses wrapped him in a warm blanket & whispered words of reassurance, he knew that he was not alone.

And as he waited for his family to arrive, Garnett couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope stirring within him. Despite the turmoil of the moment, he knew that brighter days lay ahead, filled with love, support & the promise of a future where he was safe & cherished.
