Garnett Loves to Eat

An imagining of a day enjoyed by Garnett and his grandmother.

It was a long drive from Clearwater, Florida, to Decatur, Alabama, but Garnett Spears didn’t mind. He was excited to visit his grandparents' home, a place that always felt warm & inviting. After hours on the road, he & his mother finally arrived, & Garnett was welcomed with open arms by his Nana & GG.

The first evening was all about resting after the journey, but Garnett could hardly wait for the next day. He knew that whenever he visited, his Nana had something special planned for them to do together - & this time was no different.

The very next morning, after a good night’s sleep, Garnett woke up to the smell of breakfast cooking. As he sat down at the kitchen table, Nana leaned over & whispered, “How would you like to spend the afternoon baking some cookies with me?”

Garnett’s eyes lit up. “Yes, please, Nana! Can we make chocolate chip ones?”

“Of course we can,” she replied with a smile. “We’ll make it a special day, just you & me.”

Later that afternoon, the kitchen in Decatur was bustling with activity. Garnett & his Nana gathered all the ingredients - flour, sugar, butter & of course, plenty of chocolate chips. The kitchen felt cosy, filled with the warmth of the Alabama sun streaming through the windows & the sound of birds chirping outside.

As they worked together, Garnett measured out the ingredients carefully, following Nana's instructions. He loved how she let him do so much on his own, encouraging him every step of the way. He mixed the dough with enthusiasm, sneaking a few chocolate chips when Nana wasn’t looking - though she always pretended not to notice.

Once the cookies were in the oven, Garnett & Nana sat down to wait, the house soon filling with the mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked cookies. They talked about their journey from Florida, about the things Garnett had seen along the way & about how much he loved visiting his grandparents.

When the cookies were finally done - golden brown & perfectly baked - Nana let Garnett have the first taste. He took a bite, his face lighting up with happiness.

“These are the best cookies ever, Nana!” Garnett exclaimed, savouring the gooey chocolate & the soft, warm dough.

“I’m so glad you’re here, Garnett,” Nana said, hugging him close. “You make every visit special.”

The rest of the day was spent enjoying the cookies they had baked, with GG joining in & telling funny stories from his own childhood. Garnett felt completely at home, surrounded by love & the simple joy of being with his grandparents in Decatur.

For Garnett, this visit was more than just a trip away from home - it was a chance to experience the warmth & comfort of family & to indulge in his love of cooking in a place where he was always welcome & cherished.
