An imaging of one of Garnett's joyful bath time adventures
Garnett loved bath time, especially when he stayed with his close friend - a kind, grandmotherly figure who cared for him often. Although Garnett’s beloved grandmother lived in Kentucky & his great-grandmother, whom he was also close to, lived in Florida, this friend provided him with the warmth & care of family right there in Chestnut Ridge, New York.
Bath time wasn’t just a nightly routine for Garnett; it was one of his favourite times of the day. His friend would fill the tub & help him gather his vast collection of bath toys, always amazed at how many he had. “You’ve got enough toys to fill a shipyard!” she’d tease & Garnett would giggle as he carefully picked out which boats, ducks & submarines to bring into the “ocean” that evening.
Once in the water, Garnett’s imagination would take over. The bathroom became a lively harbour, with boats rescuing stranded animals & submarines exploring the depths for treasure. “This one’s saving a turtle!” Garnett would announce, holding up a small plastic boat, his blue eyes sparkling with excitement.
His friend often sat nearby, smiling as Garnett splashed & played. She cherished these moments, knowing how much joy they brought to him. The sound of his laughter would fill the house & even as the water began to cool, Garnett was reluctant to let the adventure end.

For Garnett, bath time was never just about getting clean - it was a world of fun, creativity & happiness. It was in these simple moments that his playful, loving spirit truly shone.
Eleven years ago, on 12 January 2014, a black-&-white photo of Garnett Spears was shared online by his 'mother'. In the picture, he’s beaming with joy during bath time, a moment that perfectly captures his playful & carefree spirit.
Bath time was one of Garnett’s favourite rituals. A close friend who often cared for him once wrote that Garnett had so many bath toys they could have filled a shipyard. He would spend ages splashing & playing, letting his imagination run wild in the water. Those moments brought him so much happiness & it’s easy to see that joy in his smile.
Looking back at this picture now is bittersweet. Just five days after this post was made, Garnett was admitted to hospital. He would never get to return home & on 23 January 2014, his life support was turned off.
Garnett’s story is a heartbreaking one, but I want to remember him for the joyful little boy he was - the boy who brought light into the lives of everyone around him. This photo reminds me of that Garnett: happy, playful & full of life.
Although his time with us was far too short, moments like this one show the happiness he found in life’s simple pleasures. Today, as I reflect on him, I hold onto that joy, remembering his smile & the love he shared with the world.
Garnett, you are remembered. Your smile still touches hearts & your spirit lives on. Rest peacefully, sweet boy.🕊️💙
