✨ I wanted to share this not for drama or speculation – but because I believe Garnett’s story matters & so does his dad’s. Chris Hill didn’t get the chance to know his son, not because he didn’t want to – but because that chance was taken from him.
This is a small tribute to a father who believed Garnett was his – not just in his heart, but because he saw himself in his son’s face, in his eyes, & even though they never got the chance to meet, Chris never stopped caring.
Garnett deserved his dad. & Chris deserved his son. 💔
Chris Hill, Garnett’s biological father, lived in Decatur, Alabama. In 2008, he met Lacey Spears when she moved into the apartment directly above his. Chris described her as quiet, antisocial & a bit odd - she rarely made eye contact, barely spoke & kept to herself. Eventually, a casual relationship developed. Chris later described it as “neighbours with benefits”.
One day, Lacey asked Chris to assemble a cot in her apartment for a baby she claimed was hers. In reality, the baby - “JonJon” - belonged to a friend. Soon after their relationship had begun, she told Chris she was pregnant & that the baby was his. He offered to marry her, they went on double dates together, like a real couple. They looked through baby name books together & Lacey said she liked the name Garnett. Chris said, “Let’s keep looking.” But then Lacey made a sudden change & insisted the baby wasn’t his & blocked all contact. Chris would later say, “She just wanted to be a mother & not have a father involved.”
Garnett was born on 3 December 2008 in Huntsville, Alabama. Chris was never allowed to meet him. He had turned up at the hospital after the birth & was told to stay away or the police would be called. From his apartment, he could sometimes hear the baby crying upstairs, but that was the closest he got. Lacey created a fictional narrative, telling everyone - including her blog followers & the community around her - that Garnett’s father was “Blake”, a heroic police officer who had died in a car crash. She posted heartfelt tributes to “Blake” on social media, claiming he was her soulmate. In truth, there was no Blake.
Chris tried for years to get updates on Garnett, but Lacey blocked him on everything. He had to rely on mutual friends for scraps of information. Still, he never stopped caring. Chris believed Garnett was his - not just because of the timing, but because he thought Garnett looked just like he did as a child. He always hoped Garnett might one day want to find his dad. But Garnett never got the chance.
In January 2014, Chris found out through a mutual friend that Garnett was in hospital. It was the first he’d heard about it. Garnett was gravely ill. Chris sent Lacey a Facebook friend request. She didn’t accept it.
On 23 January 2014 - the day Garnett died - Chris posted a public Facebook status:
“This is my other son Garnett, and he is 5 years old. I never get to see him because his mom just up, and moved to New York. Well, Friday he had some severe seizures that caused his brain to swell, and now is brain dead, and on life support…. Even though I don't get to see him, I feel like he's been with me this hole (sic) time. IM not going to lie. I cried for hours when I found this out, and it will continue to hurt till the day I die.”
Lacey didn’t accept his friend request until two weeks after Garnett’s death, when media interest & public suspicion were growing. By then, many of her online supporters had turned against her. Chris, who had never stopped caring, was suddenly someone she wanted to talk to.
She wrote:
“Chris, you know we will always be a part of each others lifes (sic) for the rest of our time here. We have a son together.”
“We may not have worked out but now we both need each other. Friends at the very least. Do you agree?”
Chris was stunned. In messages that followed, Lacey said things like “I need you right now. This is OUR SON.” She said “I WANT G Back” & “I want to die”, while also admitting she knew she was under suspicion:
“I know they are looking at me. I WOULD NEVER HURT MY BABY.”
When Chris asked about reports that Garnett had been poisoned with salt, Lacey responded:
“What?”
“Salt?”
“What does this mean.”
She claimed she had only ever tried to “protect G”.
Chris wasn’t the only one who saw through her stories. A former friend, Riley Vaughn, later said:
“(Blake) was never in any pictures when Garnett was born… That was not even his daddy. His daddy, I met him. He lives in Decatur. Chris.”
Another friend, Ginger Dabbs-Anderson, said:
“She was over here, & I never saw anybody named Blake… It was all made up.”
Chris had been erased from Garnett’s life. Lacey moved repeatedly - first to Florida, then to New York - making it impossible for him to track them down. Garnett was isolated from extended family, friends & most tragically, his own father.
In a later interview, Chris said:
“Even though I never got to meet him, I believe he knew I loved him.”
Chris believes the system failed his son. But despite being shut out of Garnett’s life, he never stopped thinking about him. He believed Garnett looked just like him as a child, & hoped one day they’d be reunited.
That day never came.
